ISO 5817 self-assessment checker

ISO 5817:2023 specifies quality levels for imperfections in fusion-welded joints within its stated material, process and joint scope. This checker does not contain those acceptance values. You identify the applicable ISO 5817 requirement, copy one boundary from the edition named by the contract and check the measured dimension against it.

The default is a worked arithmetic example for ISO 6520-1 reference 5011: measured dimension 0.60 mm, illustrative maximum 1.00 mm, result 60.0% of the entered maximum and 0.40 mm margin. The 1.00 mm value is training data, not an ISO 5817 limit. Switch to Imperial to see the same inputs and output converted to inches.

Check one measured condition against your entered boundary

Confirm scope, identify the ISO 6520-1 row and quality level, then enter one complete dimensional condition from the edition named by the contract.

Confirm ISO 5817 scope

Use the contract and ISO 5817:2023 Clause 1. The tool stops when the selected material, process or joint is not clearly inside the stated scope.

Identify the applicable row

ISO 5817 does not choose a quality level for the job. Copy the level from the contract or application standard, then identify the imperfection by its ISO 6520-1 reference number.

Worked-example default: 5011, continuous undercut. The number identifies the row; it does not supply a limit.

Enter one dimensional condition

Read one condition from the applicable row in your licensed edition. Repeat the check for every condition attached to that imperfection. The example values below are training inputs, not ISO 5817 values.

Enter values to calculate.

Measured dimension mm

Boundary used mm

Margin to boundary mm

Negative means outside the entered condition.

Entered maximum used %

Shown only for a maximum-value condition.

A green badge covers only the entered condition. It never selects the quality level, supplies an acceptance value or releases the weld.

How it works

One boundary at a time, with no acceptance table built in

Maximum condition: margin = entered maximum − measured dimension

Minimum condition: margin = measured dimension − entered minimum

Range condition: margin = distance to the nearest entered boundary

A non-negative margin sits inside the single condition entered.

Scope facts come from ISO's official ISO 5817:2023 record. It identifies steel, nickel, titanium and their alloys, excludes beam welding, and lists quality levels B, C and D. The licensed document contains the conditions; this page deliberately does not.

How to run an ISO 5817 dimensional self-assessment

A repeatable check from contract requirement to recorded arithmetic.

  1. Confirm the standard scopes the joint. Check the parent material, welding process and joint type against ISO 5817:2023 Clause 1. Stop when the contract points to another acceptance standard.
  2. Copy the required quality level. Take B, C or D from the contract or application standard. ISO 5817 provides the levels; it does not decide which level the job needs.
  3. Classify the imperfection. Record the ISO 6520-1 reference number shown beside the applicable ISO 5817 row. Confirm the classification from the inspection evidence before entering a dimension.
  4. Enter one complete condition. Choose maximum, minimum or range and copy the required boundary from the licensed edition. Enter the measured dimension in the same unit system.
  5. Repeat and record. Check every other condition in the row separately. Retain the results with the inspection record for authorised disposition.
  • Classify first. Use the ISO 6520-1 reference number supported by the inspection finding. The weld imperfection library helps distinguish common imperfection families without supplying acceptance values.
  • Keep the inspection route visible. ISO 5817 grades imperfections; it does not make every inspection-method decision. Use the ISO 17637 scope card for visual testing and the governing inspection plan for other methods.
  • Record all conditions. One row can require more than one dimensional check. A pass here means only that the measurement is inside the boundary entered for this run.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask about this calculation

Can this ISO 5817 checker certify that a weld is acceptable?

No. It checks one measurement against one boundary supplied by the user. Final acceptance also depends on the correct standard edition, the quality level selected by the contract or application standard, the correct ISO 6520-1 classification, every condition in the applicable imperfection row, the inspection method and any project-specific requirement. Keep the authorised acceptance decision in the inspection record.

Where does the boundary entered in this checker come from?

From the applicable imperfection row in the current licensed edition named by the contract. Select the required quality level, find the ISO 6520-1 reference number, read the complete condition and enter only the boundary needed for this arithmetic pass. No acceptance value is bundled with the page.

Why does this tool ask for an ISO 6520-1 reference number?

The reference number identifies the imperfection consistently before its ISO 5817 condition is read. Shop-floor names can be ambiguous; the numbered classification keeps the measurement tied to the intended row. The checker records the number in its result but does not infer the imperfection or its boundary from that number.

How should a row with several dimensional conditions be checked?

Run each condition separately and retain every result with the inspection record. A result inside one boundary does not clear the other conditions attached to the same imperfection. Ratio-based conditions must first be evaluated from the dimensions named by the standard, then checked alongside any separate dimensional boundary.

Keep process evidence separate from final acceptance

WeldTrace records welding parameters for each pass. Those records can support investigation and traceability, but they do not replace inspection or decide ISO 5817 acceptance.
