Welding engineering services with trials in our cell

Test a material, a joint or a parameter window before it reaches production. We weld and measure in our cell, or bring the instruments to your line, and give you the data and a written report.

Therness is a Politecnico di Torino spin-off that develops weld monitoring with thermal cameras, high-speed cameras and weld-parameter acquisition. The same instruments record every trial, so the answer comes with evidence.

Services

Four ways to work with us

Each package has a defined scope, duration and deliverables in the quote.

Weldability trials and parameter development

Welding runs in our cell on your material and joint, with thermal monitoring and parameter recording on every bead. You get the parameter window that worked, the data behind it and the evidence to take into qualification.

Measurement campaigns with report

A defined series of welds measured in our cell or on your line: temperature, cooling, current, voltage, wire feed and gas. The report shows repeatability, drifts and where the process moves out of its usual range.

Feasibility studies

Can in-process monitoring see what matters on your part? We test camera position, optics and signals on representative welds and tell you what is visible, what is not and which setup fits.

Short pilot

Instruments installed on your cell for an agreed period, reference welds recorded and results reviewed together at the end. See how we approach validation of weld monitoring.

Instruments

What we measure with

  • Thermal camera (HeatCam IR-C): radiometric temperature per pixel, heat distribution, interpass temperature and cooling.
  • High-speed camera (PoolDrop): weld pool shape and droplet transfer in the visible range.
  • Parameter acquisition (WeldTrace): current, voltage and wire feed speed at 25 kHz, shielding gas flow at 10 Hz.
  • Analysis software (HeatCore): synchronised recordings, process metrics and comparison with reference welds.

Our cell: a six-axis collaborative robot on an 1800 × 800 mm table, MIG/MAG welding with controlled short-circuit and pulsed transfer, also used for WAAM deposition. Carbon steel is already proven in the cell; other materials are evaluated for your case in the quote.

How it works

From question to report

  1. Your question. Process, material, joint and what you need to decide.
  2. Scope and quote. Package, duration, deliverables, fixed price or daily rate.
  3. Trials or measurements. In our cell or on your line, every weld recorded.
  4. Report and review. Data, results and limits, discussed with you in a call.

FAQ

Questions about trials and campaigns

What do I need to send for a weldability trial?

Material, thickness, joint geometry, the process you use or plan to use, and the question you want answered. If you have coupons or parts, we agree how many to send; otherwise we discuss sourcing the material in the quote.

Do you qualify my welding procedure?

We develop and measure parameters and give you the evidence: recordings, data and a report. Approval of a procedure or welder qualification stays with your welding coordinator, your customer or the examining body named in your contract.

Can the measurement campaign run on our own line?

Yes. We can bring the instruments to your cell or line, record the agreed welds and analyse them, or run the same campaign in our cell when you cannot spare production time.

What is in the report?

The method, the instruments and settings, the results with charts and thermal images, the limits of what the data shows, and a recommended next step. Raw data can be delivered with the report on request.

How are the services priced?

Each package is quoted either at a fixed price for a defined scope or at a daily rate. The quote states duration, deliverables and what you need to provide.

Is a pilot a commitment to buy a system?

No. A short pilot answers a defined question on your process. If the results support it, a system offer is a separate decision.

Need only a thermal camera for your own lab or line? See the industrial thermal camera in stock.
