Engineering consulting for welding, WAAM, thermography and machine vision
A datasheet cannot tell you whether a joint holds its window, whether a camera can see the defect or how to monitor a WAAM build. We answer with measurements on your parts.
Therness, a Politecnico di Torino spin-off, develops and integrates the thermal and high-speed cameras our engineers use in every engagement: each answer comes with data and a written report.
Decisions taken without data cost the most
Four consulting formats
Feasibility study
Can a measurement or a camera see what matters on your part? We test signals, positions and optics on representative samples and tell you what is visible, what is not and which setup fits. For thermal and optical setups outside welding, see custom thermal imaging solutions.
Trials in our lab cell
Welding or deposition runs on your material and joint in our cell, with thermal, visual and parameter recording on every bead. Packages and details: welding trials and measurement campaigns.
Integration in your cell and line
Sensor position, mounting, cabling, software and connection to your line, then commissioning and training. We integrate Therness cameras and acquisition, and design custom setups where a standard one does not fit.
Continuous technical consulting
An engineer on call over months: parameter reviews, data from your cells read with you, procedure work and decisions on drifts. For DOE and WPS work on a released process, see welding process optimization consulting.
Where our engineers work
- Welding: MIG/MAG, pulsed and controlled short-circuit transfer, parameter windows, repeatability and drifts.
- Process monitoring: which signal to record (temperature, weld pool image, current, voltage, wire feed, gas) and how to compare each weld with a reference. Overview: monitoring of the welding process.
- WAAM: deposition strategy, interpass temperature and layer-by-layer records. Parts made for you: WAAM contract manufacturing; monitoring of your own builds: WAAM monitoring.
- Industrial thermography: fixed thermal cameras for process control and inspections of plant and equipment. Inspections: industrial thermography services; a camera from stock: industrial thermal camera.
- Machine vision: high-speed visible imaging of the weld pool and custom vision setups for cells and lines: machine vision systems.
The instruments behind every answer

- Lab cell: a six-axis collaborative robot on an 1800 × 800 mm table, MIG/MAG welding with controlled short-circuit and pulsed transfer, also used for WAAM deposition.
- Thermal: HeatCam IR-C, −20 °C to 900 °C standard, 200 °C to 1500 °C optional.
- Visual: Therness PoolDrop, weld pool and droplet transfer at up to 480 fps.
- Parameters: WeldTrace, current, voltage and wire feed speed at up to 25 kHz.
From question to report
- Your question. Process, material, part and what you need to decide. We reply within one business day.
- Scope and quote. Format, duration, deliverables and dates. Price on request: fixed price for a defined scope or daily rate.
- Measurements. In our cell or on your line, every run recorded.
- Report and review. Data, results and limits, discussed with you in a call.
Questions about our consulting
Which consulting format should I start with?
If you do not yet know whether a measurement or a camera can answer your question, start with a feasibility study. If you know what to test, book trials in our cell. If the setup is decided, ask for integration. If you need an engineer on call over months, ask for continuous consulting.
Do you work on our site or in your lab?
Both. Trials and feasibility tests run in our lab cell when you can send parts or material. Measurement campaigns, integration and continuous consulting run on your cell or line.
Do we have to buy Therness hardware?
No. Consulting is sold on its own. We use our own instruments during the work; if the results support a system on your line, that offer is a separate decision.
What do we receive at the end?
A written report with the method, the instruments and settings, the data, the results, their limits and a recommended next step. Raw data and recordings can be delivered with the report on request.
How is consulting priced?
Price on request. Each quote states the scope, the duration, the deliverables and what you need to provide, either at a fixed price for a defined scope or at a daily rate. The feasibility study has a fixed price, on request.
Do you certify procedures or parts?
No. We produce the measurements and the evidence. Approval of a procedure, a welder or a part stays with your welding coordinator, your customer or the body named in your contract.
Start with a feasibility study
Tell us the process, the part and the decision you need to take. We reply with the format that fits, the duration and a quote. Feasibility study: fixed price, on request.
