ISO 14732: scope and what it qualifies

Does ISO 14732 cover your mechanized or automatic welding cell? Scope decision flow for the operator and weld-setter qualification standard, its boundary with manual welder qualification, and the records a range check depends on.

Title
Welding personnel — Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters for mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials
Edition
Confirm the edition your certification scheme cites.

ISO 14732 answers a question ISO 9606 does not: who is qualified to run the equipment, not the arc by hand. It covers operators who run, and weld setters who set up, mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials, and works through a range of approval the qualification test establishes, not a general competence claim.

The boundary that matters is process control: once a person guides the torch or electrode directly, the job sits under ISO 9606 instead. ISO 14732 is for whoever sets up, monitors and adjusts equipment doing the positioning itself. The full guide to operator qualification covers the record-keeping side of that split.

The same range-of-approval logic the ISO 9606-1 checker walks through for manual steel welding applies conceptually here — a job has to sit inside the band a specific test actually covered, typed in from the reader’s own edition rather than assumed.

Therness equipment does not qualify an operator or setter. It ties every weld a mechanized cell produces to the operator responsible and the measured values it ran at, so a range check has a real record. See ISO 15607 for procedure qualification, and wire arc additive manufacturing for a process family where this standard is the norm.

Scope: does it apply to your job?

Applies to

  • Qualification testing of operators who run mechanized and automatic welding equipment for metallic materials
  • Qualification testing of weld setters who set up that same mechanized and automatic welding equipment
  • Establishing which equipment, process and parameter range a qualified operator or setter covers

Does not apply to

  • Manual or partly mechanized welding, qualified under the matching part of ISO 9606
  • Qualifying the welding procedure the equipment runs, covered by ISO 15607
  • Assigning who is scheduled to a job, the ISO 14731 coordination function
  • Friction stir and friction stir spot welding personnel, covered by ISO 25239-3 and ISO 18785-3

Applicability decision flow

Four questions that decide whether ISO 14732 governs the joint
QuestionIf yesIf no
Is the job mechanized or automatic welding of a metallic material?ISO 14732 is the applicable qualification standard, for the operator or the weld setter role.Manual or partly mechanized welding routes to the matching part of ISO 9606 instead.
Does the job stay inside the operator's or setter's qualified range of approval? The existing qualification covers the work.A new test, or an extension the standard allows, is needed before assignment.
Has continuity of qualification been confirmed at the interval the standard sets? The qualification remains current.Treat the certificate as lapsed until continuity is re-established.

What proves conformity, and what only supports it

Conformity is decided by inspection and testing against the criteria the standard and the contract set. The records below are evidence that the process was held where it was qualified; they support an inspection result, they never replace one.

Questions engineers ask about ISO 14732

What is the difference between ISO 14732 and ISO 9606?

ISO 14732 qualifies operators and weld setters for mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials. ISO 9606 qualifies manual welders, split by material.

Does ISO 14732 qualify a robotic welding cell itself?

No. It qualifies the operator or setter responsible for setup, not the robot. The procedure the cell runs is qualified separately under ISO 15607.

Can a manual welder's ISO 9606 certificate cover mechanized work?

No. The two schemes test different skills; mechanized or automatic welding always needs its own ISO 14732 qualification.

Evidence the process, not just the paperwork

Therness records what the machine actually delivered on every weld — parameters, thermal signature and a per-weld trail — so a conformity argument rests on measurements instead of recollection.
