ISO 9606-1: scope and what it qualifies

Does ISO 9606-1 cover your welder for this job? Scope decision flow for the steel welder-qualification standard, the codes it sits beside, and the records a range-of-approval check depends on.

Title
Qualification testing of welders — Fusion welding — Part 1: Steels
Edition
Confirm the edition your certification scheme cites.

ISO 9606-1 qualifies a welder, not a person’s general competence — a certificate reads as broader than it is. A pass on one test piece establishes a range of approval, a band of thickness, diameter, position and other essential variables the standard extends the result across, and work outside that band is outside the qualification even when the welder could plainly perform it.

The scope boundary that trips manufacturers up first is process type: manual and partly mechanized steel welding sits here, but a mechanized or automatic cell routes to ISO 14732 instead, and a different base metal routes to a different part of the same series. The second boundary is time — continuity has to be confirmed at the interval the standard sets, and a lapsed confirmation lapses the qualification regardless of how much welding the person did in the meantime. The full guide to range of approval covers both boundaries and the retest triggers between them.

Where ISO 3834-2 requires qualified personnel, this standard is the route that satisfies it, and ISO 14731 is the coordination layer that checks the match between welder and job before the arc starts, not after a weld already exists outside its qualified range. Therness equipment ties every weld to the welder who made it and the values the process actually ran at, so the range-of-approval check has a real record to test against instead of a job traveller taken on trust.

Scope: does it apply to your job?

Applies to

  • Qualification testing of welders performing manual or partly mechanized fusion welding of steel
  • Establishing the range of approval a welder's certificate actually covers
  • Contracts and application standards that require welders to hold a current ISO 9606-1 qualification

Does not apply to

  • Mechanized and automatic welding, covered by ISO 14732 for operators and weld setters
  • Materials other than steel — aluminium and its alloys sit under ISO 9606-2
  • Qualifying the welding procedure itself, which the ISO 15607 and ISO 15614 series cover

Applicability decision flow

Four questions that decide whether ISO 9606-1 governs the joint
QuestionIf yesIf no
Is the welder performing manual or partly mechanized fusion welding of steel?ISO 9606-1 is the applicable qualification standard.A mechanized or automatic process routes to ISO 14732 instead; a different base metal routes to the matching part of ISO 9606.
Does the job fall inside the range of approval the test piece supports — thickness, diameter, position and the other essential variables? The existing certificate covers the work.A new qualification test, or an extension where the standard allows one, is needed before the welder is assigned to it.
Has the welder's continuity been confirmed at the interval the standard sets? The qualification remains current. The certificate is treated as lapsed until continuity is re-established by the route the standard defines.
Does the construction code or contract require a route other than ISO 9606-1, such as ASME Section IX?Follow the named route instead; the two schemes are not interchangeable without an explicit equivalence statement.ISO 9606-1 governs the qualification.

What proves conformity, and what only supports it

Conformity is decided by inspection and testing against the criteria the standard and the contract set. The records below are evidence that the process was held where it was qualified; they support an inspection result, they never replace one.

Evidence the process, not just the paperwork

Therness records what the machine actually delivered on every weld — parameters, thermal signature and a per-weld trail — so a conformity argument rests on measurements instead of recollection.
