ISO 4063: scope and how process reference numbers work

Does ISO 4063 supply the process number on your WPS? Scope decision flow for the welding-process nomenclature standard, and how a reference number differs from a qualification.

Title
Welding and allied processes — Nomenclature of processes and reference numbers
Edition
Confirm the edition your WPS or symbol drawing cites.

ISO 4063 solves a translation problem: it gives every welding, brazing and allied process a number, so that a WPS, a PQR, a welder qualification certificate or a symbol drawing can identify the process unambiguously regardless of what it is called locally. Manual metal arc welding is 111; gas-shielded metal arc processes sit in the 13x family, split further by shielding technique; TIG is 141 with filler and 142 autogenous. The number is a designation, not a specification — it says which process was used, never how well or under what parameters.

The standard also groups related techniques under a shared parent number, and this is where the subtlety usually gets lost on a shop floor: a family number and a fully specific sub-number are not the same commitment. A later change between two techniques inside one family — a shift in metal transfer mode being the clearest example — can itself be an essential variable a qualification code treats as significant, even though both techniques share one ISO 4063 parent number. Confirming the sub-number, not just the family, is the difference between a WPS that documents what actually ran and one that only documents the general category; the WPS essential variables checklist is where that distinction gets written down.

The number then travels with the joint through every downstream document: it appears on the WPS, on the welder’s range of approval, and inside the process callout on a symbol drawing under ISO 2553. Therness process equipment captures the underlying waveform at a resolution fine enough to distinguish between transfer modes sharing a single process family, so the record a job leaves behind reflects what actually ran rather than only the family number written on the traveler.

Scope: does it apply to your job?

Applies to

  • Numeric reference numbers assigned to welding, brazing and allied processes, grouped into families such as arc, resistance and gas processes
  • Naming a process on a WPS, a PQR, a welder qualification certificate, or inside a welding symbol per ISO 2553

Does not apply to

  • Qualifying that a process was executed correctly, which is the procedure and welder qualification standards, not a naming scheme
  • A different national process-naming scheme, such as AWS abbreviations, which is not a direct one-to-one match to the ISO number

Applicability decision flow

Four questions that decide whether ISO 4063 governs the joint
QuestionIf yesIf no
Is the question which number identifies a given process, rather than how to qualify or run it?ISO 4063 is the applicable reference.Qualification and parameters come from the procedure standards; this only supplies the identifier they cite.
Is the process a specific variant of a broader family the standard further subdivides?Use the more specific sub-number where the standard defines one, not just the parent family number. The parent family number applies.
Does a drawing cite a process using a non-ISO abbreviation, such as an AWS term?Translate deliberately to the ISO 4063 number rather than assuming the two schemes align. The ISO number applies directly.

What proves conformity, and what only supports it

Conformity is decided by inspection and testing against the criteria the standard and the contract set. The records below are evidence that the process was held where it was qualified; they support an inspection result, they never replace one.

Evidence the process, not just the paperwork

Therness records what the machine actually delivered on every weld — parameters, thermal signature and a per-weld trail — so a conformity argument rests on measurements instead of recollection.
