Welder qualification

Welder qualification is the documented demonstration that a specific welder or welding operator can produce a sound weld within a defined range of processes, materials, thicknesses and positions.

Welder qualification answers a question a PQR does not answer: not whether a procedure can produce a sound weld, but whether this welder can execute it reliably. A welder is tested on a representative joint, and the completed test piece is examined — visually, and typically by mechanical or non-destructive testing, or both — against the same kind of criteria a production weld would face, including the applicable quality level.

What a passing test actually certifies is a range, not a single joint type. ISO 9606-1, the steel welder-qualification standard, defines how far a qualifying test extends: which base-material groups, which thickness band, which pipe or plate diameters, which welding positions and which process variations a single qualification test covers. A welder qualified on one combination is not automatically qualified on every combination outside that range, and how long a qualification stays valid before requiring renewal is likewise set by the governing standard rather than by the individual test result. ASME Section IX records the equivalent test as a Welder Performance Qualification, a different document name for essentially the same evidence.

Welder qualification and procedure qualification move independently. A shop can hold a fully qualified WPS, backed by a valid PQR, and still be unable to run production because no currently qualified welder covers the joint in front of them — or the reverse, a qualified welder with no qualified procedure to follow. Quality management systems such as ISO 3834-2 require both records to exist and be current simultaneously, which is why an audit checks personnel qualification and procedure qualification as two separate, cross-referenced items rather than inferring one from the other.

Where you meet this term

  • Welder certification and re-certification testing
  • Welding quality management system audits, as evidence of competent personnel
  • Assigning a welder to production work within their approved range
  • Digital traceability records that link a production weld to the welder who made it
