ISO 3834-5: the documents a quality-level claim depends on

Claiming Part 2, 3 or 4 of ISO 3834? Decision flow for the personnel, procedure and management documents it names alongside the claim, and the records that satisfy them.

Title
Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 5: Documents with which it is necessary to conform to claim conformity to the quality requirements of ISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 or ISO 3834-4
Edition
Confirm the edition your certification body works to.

ISO 3834-5 is the least understood part of the series because it reads as a bibliography rather than a standard. It has almost no requirements of its own; it names the other documents — mostly other standards — that a manufacturer has to already be conforming to before a claim against ISO 3834-2, -3 or -4 is defensible.

That list changes with which part is declared: a comprehensive Part 2 claim pulls in the deepest set of supporting documents, while Part 3 or Part 4 draw on the same list at a lighter depth. Constant across all three is the set of welding-specific documents — welder qualification under ISO 9606-1 or ISO 14732, procedure qualification under the ISO 15607/15614 series, and coordination under ISO 14731 — because those sit outside what any quality-management certificate can evidence on its own.

The practical failure mode is treating a 3834 claim as a single certificate rather than a stack of them. An auditor working from this part checks the stack, not just the top certificate: is the coordinator actually named and current, are the welders qualified for the joints they are welding, is the procedure a real qualification record rather than an assumed one. Records that answer those questions per weld — not per audit cycle — are what turn the stack into something an auditor can sample rather than take on trust, and that is the layer Therness equipment produces underneath whichever part the claim is made against.

Scope: does it apply to your job?

Applies to

  • Manufacturers and certification bodies checking which additional standards a declared ISO 3834 part depends on
  • Confirming that quality management, welding coordination and personnel qualification are documented to the standards the declared part names

Does not apply to

  • Stating the welding quality requirements themselves — those stay in Parts 2, 3 and 4
  • Replacing the standards it names; it lists which ones apply, it does not restate their content
  • Selecting the part in the first place, which Part 1's criteria decide

Has a specific part — 2, 3 or 4 — already been declared for the claim? That declared part sets the depth of the document list below; work from its specific requirements.Settle the part first against the selection criteria in ISO 3834-1, then return to this list.
Does the declared scope include manual or partly mechanized welder qualification? The ISO 9606 series is the qualification standard this part names for that work.Check whether mechanized or automatic operators are in scope instead, covered by ISO 14732.
Does the organisation appoint welding coordination personnel?ISO 14731 sets the tasks and responsibilities this part expects to be documented for them.Reconsider — every declared part of the series expects coordination personnel to be identified.
Is a welding procedure being qualified from scratch, rather than adopted from a standard specification? The ISO 15607 and ISO 15614 series are the qualification route this part names.A standard welding procedure specification may be adopted instead, subject to the conditions the declared part sets.

What proves conformity, and what only supports it

Conformity is decided by inspection and testing against the criteria the standard and the contract set. The records below are evidence that the process was held where it was qualified; they support an inspection result, they never replace one.

Evidence the process, not just the paperwork

Therness records what the machine actually delivered on every weld — parameters, thermal signature and a per-weld trail — so a conformity argument rests on measurements instead of recollection.
