3D Printing With Metal — WAAM, Layer Upon Layer

Wire arc additive manufacturing builds solid metal directly from a spool — layer on layer, each weld bead the foundation for the next.

3D Printing With Metal — WAAM, Layer Upon Layer
Wire arc additive manufacturing: solid metal built layer by layer from a spool of wire.
Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is metal 3D printing at weld-pool scale: every layer is a weld bead deposited on the one before it, and every pass adds heat that the next layer has to absorb. Watching the deposition happen — bead by bead, layer by layer — makes it obvious why interpass temperature control is the difference between a dimensionally sound part and one that slumps or delaminates.

What you see

  • Solid metal built directly from a wire spool, bead on bead.
  • Each new layer deposited on the melt pool of the one before it.
  • Heat accumulating across passes as the build grows.
  • Why interpass temperature control keeps geometry and microstructure stable.

Monitor it with Therness

  • HeatCam thermal sensors read layer and interpass temperature live.
  • HeatCore AI flags overheating and process drift before a layer fails.
  • Layer-by-layer thermal records build QA evidence for every part.
  • Works on carbon steel, titanium, and nickel WAAM builds.
