English version
Three parts of ISO 15614 qualify welding procedures for materials that are not covered by the parts for steel, nickel and aluminium: ISO 15614-3 for cast iron, ISO 15614-5 for titanium, zirconium and their alloys, and ISO 15614-6 for copper and copper alloys. Steels and nickel stay in EN ISO 15614-1; aluminium is in ISO 15614-2.
Two of the three are old editions that ISO has reviewed and confirmed: Part 3 from 2008 and Part 6 from 2006, both confirmed in 2023. Part 5 changed: the 2024 edition replaced the 2004 edition, which is now withdrawn. If your titanium or zirconium WPQRs cite ISO 15614-5:2004, read the section on Part 5 before your next audit.
Which part covers which material
| Part | Material and processes | Current edition | Earlier edition | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 15614-3 | Fusion welding of non-alloyed and low-alloyed cast irons, production and repair | 2008 (edition 1) | none | Current, confirmed 2023 |
| ISO 15614-5 | Arc welding of titanium, zirconium and their alloys (processes 131, 14, 15) | 2024 (edition 2) | 2004 (withdrawn) | Current |
| ISO 15614-6 | Arc and gas welding of copper and copper alloys | 2006 (edition 1) | none | Current, confirmed 2023 |
All three share the series title “Specification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials — Welding procedure test” and come from the same ISO committee, ISO/TC 44/SC 10. They are the welding procedure test route described in ISO 15607; the general rules, and the choice between a test and the other routes, are covered in ISO 15607 qualification routes.
Cast iron: ISO 15614-3:2008
Part 3 specifies how a pWPS is qualified by fusion welding procedure tests for both production welding and repair welding of non-alloyed and low-alloyed cast irons. It applies to castings to EN 1561, EN 1562, EN 1563 and EN 1564. Its principles also apply when cast iron is welded to steel, or to other non-alloyed and low-alloyed cast iron materials.
Repair welding is in scope. That matters in a foundry or a repair shop, where much of the cast iron welding is repair rather than new fabrication: a repair welding procedure is also qualified by a procedure test under Part 3.
Part 3 does not invalidate tests made to former national standards. Where technical equivalence needs additional tests, only those additional tests are carried out, on a test piece made to Part 3. Application standards can require more tests.
Titanium and zirconium: ISO 15614-5:2024
Part 5 covers arc welding of titanium, zirconium and their alloys in all product forms. The processes named are those of ISO 4063 numbers 131 (MIG welding), 14 (TIG welding) and 15 (plasma arc welding). Its principles can be applied to other fusion welding processes. The range of qualification is set by the variables in Clause 8, and application standards can require additional tests.
Edition 2 was published in February 2024 and replaced the 2004 edition. A WPQR issued to the 2004 edition is still the document your customer accepted. The question is which edition the contract names, not which one is newest. Confirm with the customer which edition applies before you plan a new test, and requalify to the 2024 edition when the contract or the customer specification asks for it.
Titanium welding has its own monitoring questions, mainly shielding and the thermal cycle. They are covered in titanium welding quality monitoring.
Copper: ISO 15614-6:2006
Part 6 covers arc and gas welding of copper and copper alloys in all product forms. It is the first edition, published in April 2006, and ISO confirmed it in 2023. As with the other parts, the variables, test methods and acceptance values are in the standard itself, and application standards can add to them.
This article does not quote preheat temperatures, shielding gas requirements, test methods or ranges of qualification for any of the three parts. Read them clause by clause in your own copy.
Before you book the test
- Part. Match the base material to the part: cast iron to Part 3, titanium or zirconium to Part 5, copper to Part 6. For cast iron welded to steel, apply the principles of Part 3 and agree with the customer how.
- Edition. Read the edition named in the contract or customer specification. For Part 5, check whether it names the 2004 or the 2024 edition.
- Process. For Part 5, put the ISO 4063 process number (131, 14 or 15) on the pWPS. For any other fusion process, agree with the customer how the principles of Part 5 are applied.
- Production or repair. For cast iron, state on the pWPS whether the procedure is for production or repair welding.
- Records. Keep the welding parameters and test results of the test piece with the WPQR, so the range of qualification can be traced back to the test. See digital WPS/PQR records.
Where process data fits
Per-weld process and thermal records show what the machine delivered on each production weld. They support the evidence that production stays inside the qualified range, but they do not replace the procedure test or the examiner’s decision. WeldTrace records current, voltage, wire feed speed and gas flow for every weld. For TIG welding, which covers most titanium and much copper work, see TIG welding quality monitoring.
Versione italiana
Quale parte copre quale materiale
| Parte | Materiale e processi | Edizione corrente | Edizione precedente | Stato |
|---|---|---|---|---|
