English version
ISO 15614-8 is the part of the ISO 15614 series that qualifies welding procedures for tube to tube-plate joints: the welds that hold the tubes in the tube-sheet of a heat exchanger, a boiler or a condenser. It sets the requirements for qualification testing of procedures for arc welding of these joints in metallic materials, whether the welding is manual, partly mechanized, fully mechanized or automatic.
The current edition is ISO 15614-8:2016 (edition 2, published March 2016), which replaced the 2002 edition. ISO last reviewed and confirmed it in 2023, so it is still the edition to use. This article covers which joints Part 8 qualifies, why the application standard decides between a seal weld and a strength weld, and what to fix before you book a test.
Which joints Part 8 covers
Part 8 applies to fusion welding of tube to tube-plate joints that keep a remaining gap between the tube and the tube-plate for some length of the tube-plate thickness. That is the usual heat exchanger joint: the tube passes through the hole in the plate and is welded at the face.
Two cases sit outside Part 8 or at its edge, and a third depends on the specification.
| Joint | What Part 8 says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tube-sheet with forged end connections and welded tubes (external or internal bore welds) | Not covered | Agree the qualification route with the customer before the design is frozen. |
| Joint with load-bearing mechanical expansion | The welding procedure test is to be defined | Get the test written into the specification before you weld the test piece. |
| Other applications or requirements | Part 8 can be used if the specification requires it | Check that the specification names Part 8. |
Other arc and gas welded joints in steels, and arc welded joints in nickel, are qualified under EN ISO 15614-1. How Part 8 fits among the other qualification routes is explained in ISO 15607 qualification routes; ISO 15607 describes the whole ISO 15614 series in its Annex A.
Seal weld or strength weld: why the application standard decides
A procedure qualified by a tube to tube-plate joint test under Part 8 can be used for all joints, whether they are fully loaded or only seal welded, as the application standard requires. Part 8 gives the test; the application standard decides what the joint has to do.
So read the application standard first. It tells you whether the weld only has to seal or whether it has to carry the tube load, and that decides how you design the joint and the test piece.

A WPQR issued to the 2002 edition is still the document your customer accepted. The question is which edition the contract names. Confirm it with the customer before you plan a new test.
This article does not quote the number of test tubes, the test methods, the acceptance levels or the range of qualification. Read them clause by clause in your own copy of the standard, and agree any extra tests with the customer.
Before you book the test
- Edition. Read the edition named in the contract or customer specification. For a new test, the current edition is 2016.
- Joint design. Record the tube-plate hole, the remaining gap and whether there is mechanical expansion. If the expansion is load-bearing, get the test defined in the specification first.
- Process and mechanization. Put the process and the mechanization level (manual, partly mechanized, fully mechanized or automatic) on the pWPS, matching how production will weld.
- Repair welding. Part 8 requires repair welding to be considered in the welding procedure test. Decide with the customer how a repair is represented in the test.
- Records. Keep the welding parameters and test results of each test tube with the WPQR, so the range of qualification can be traced back to the test. See digital WPS/PQR records.
Where process data fits
A tube-sheet carries many tube welds made to one qualified procedure. Per-weld process records show what the machine delivered on each of them. They support the evidence that production stays inside the qualified range, but they do not replace the procedure test or the examiner’s decision.
WeldTrace records current, voltage, wire feed speed and gas flow for every weld. Where the tube welds are made with orbital TIG heads, see cooling rate monitoring in orbital tube welding, TIG welding quality monitoring and the heat exchanger welding application page.
Versione italiana
